2011 Audi TT RS S Tronic

Audi's advanced seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission made its international debut in the top-shelf TT RS late last year, delivering a 0-100km/h time 0.3 seconds faster than the existing six-speed manual.

Now, coinciding with the opening of the 2011 Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne on Friday, the quickest-shifting TT RS is in Australia.

The S tronic system allows the driver to choose between two automatic modes and a full manual mode, shifting gears via paddles behind the steering wheel or on the gear lever.

Through the pairing of the slick S tronic and Audi's 250kW/450Nm 2.5 litre five-cylinder TFSI turobcharged engine, the TT RS returns full consumption figures of 8.5 l/100km - again bettering the manual, which lists a 9.2 l/100km fuel consumption rating.

To celebrate the local launch of the S tronic-equipped TT RS, Audi has also announced a Limited Edition variant - and just 45 will be sold.

Audi Q3 RS Likely to Debut in 2012

Apparently, Audi is mulling a high performance RS version of the Q3 that will be equipped with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine currently found in the Audi TT RS and the Audi RS3. The forthcoming Audi Q3 RS is expected to be capable of churning out power of 300 hp.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, inside sources have revealed that the Q3 RS is coming, at least in Europe. One can expect the Audi Q3 RS to feature a number of suspension upgrades, a sporty body kit as well as custom interior pieces. The Q3 RS will likely be available for sale by the fall of 2012.

Incidentally the 2012 Audi Q3 is available with three different four-cylinder engines namely a TDI and two TFSI units. All three combines direct injection with turbocharging and features an energy recovery system as well as a start-stop system. Meanwhile, the gasoline engine and diesel engine are mated to a quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic transmission respectively.

Audi RS 3 Sportback

The launch of Audi’s latest model provided the opportunity to follow in the tyre-tracks of motoring history.

The company introduced the power-packed RS 3 Sportback in Austria, and a major part of our driving route was the mountainous Turracher Hohe, a challenging alpine pass where Audi presented the first quattro prototype to their board of management in January 1978.

So we were sampling the latest all-wheel-drive model at the place of the famous system’s debut, and it soon became evident why this spot had been chosen to display those tremendous road-holding capabilities.

The new car, a high performance version of the A3 hatchback, in five-door form, has the look of poise, power and pace about it – all of which it gloriously delivers. The styling speaks of the car’s performance potential ... looking muscular yet svelte.

The front has a deeper apron that incorporates enlarged air intakes, an anthracite coloured single-frame grille with diamond patterned styling and xenon plus headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The side view is dominated by the flared, lightweight front wings (made of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer) covering 19in alloy wheels, prominent sill extensions, mirror casings in a matt aluminium look and a large roof spoiler. Two elliptical exhaust tailpipes give an air of power to the rear.

2012 Audi A7

With one of my best friends’ wedding celebrations taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana over a June weekend, I was desperate to turn the trip into an excuse for a great road trip, and a travelogue story. The problem is that I wouldn’t be traveling alone on this trip, but bringing along my fiancĂ©e who was a little hesitant to take off from work for an extra day of just driving (something I have no problem with, as I kind of drive for a living). Of course, in this world of blistering new technology, there had to be a solution.

“No problem,” I told the slightly skeptical Molly, “I’ll get us a car that has mobile internet, so you can work from the road just like you’d work from home.”

Thankfully, after making promises of cars with wildly futuristic technology to my hardworking life partner, the good folks at Audi were able to come through with a solution: the all new 2012 A7 equipped with Audi Connect. Audi’s in-car internet system would allow us to connect up via a 3G signal, wherever we went. The “Mobile Office” plan was thus enacted, and we prepared to drive simultaneously to NOLA and to The Future Of What Is Possible. A can’t-miss plan.
